The Powerchair Hockey World Championships ended with the victory of the Italian national team on Denmark
Lignano Sabbiadoro, 30 September 2018 – The final day of the powerchair hockey world championships saw the triumph of the Italian National Team that beat Denmark winning on penalties 3 to 2. Great party not only for the hosts but for all the participants, as a right conclusion, of an event #asneverbefore.
At 9.30 there was the challenge for the seventh and eighth place with a surprising victory for Canada, new entry in this sport, on Australia, which despite the great progress seen during this competition is confirmed to the eighth place in the world ranking. Than, Switzerland, after beating the Netherlands in the group, was found to play the finals for the fifth and sixth place winning 6 to 2 against Belgium.
An intense afternoon was opened with the final for the third step of the podium: Germany and the Netherlands have been challenged without exclusion of blows fighting point to point for the duration of the regulatory times that ends 3 on 3. Only the golden goal signed by Dennis van the Boomen delivers the bronze medal in the hands of the Oranges, a consolation for the outgoing world champion, who in this tournament achieved the worst result in its history.
Finally, the incredible match of the final that has glued thousands of spectators in the stands or in front of their screens holding them in suspense for over sixty minutes. Denmark and Italy, in fact, have studied each other for a long part of the race, until on a rebound, the Italian national Ion Jignea signs the goal of the advantage. Than, the national teams played a very balanced second half during which they studied the right time to attack: a little more than a minute of the term Anders Berenth (best hand stick of the tournament) scores the draw goal on a penalty. The extra time confirmed the draw and at the end only the lottery of penalties consecrates Italy World Champions, in front of all its audience, thanks to two extraordinary parades by Marco Ferrazza.
A memorable event, ended in the best way with the closing ceremony and the great final party with great participation of all the present people, which brought great prominence to the entire national and international movement of electric wheelchair hockey.
